Space Room

Description

What would it be like to wake up one morning in a completely unfamiliar room? All around, you can see unfamiliar furniture, objects and toys, and outside the window, instead of the familiar backyard, you see … space! When all this happens to Emma, the little girl is convinced that she is still dreaming. But after a while, she realises how much power a birthday wish only spoken in her head can have: “I wish my room was out of this world”. Over time, initial rage turns into fascination, and anxiety-filled life in Warsaw into an amazing journey, full of extraordinary characters and adventures that help us believe in the beauty of this world.

What are the stories behind the souls of objects – a sofa, a telescope, a flower, a unicorn toy? With their help, will Emma manage to find her way in a new city, school, reality? “Space Room” is a musical performance scripted during a summer workshop with children from different countries, cultures, backgrounds and places. Magdalena Mrozińska created a comedy of errors enriched with songs, which has its origins in children’s stories. Conversations about homes, both distant and symbolic, as well as very specific and close ones, turned into a beautiful story about longing, finding one’s place in the world, the power of friendship and the idea that no matter what, it is worth dreaming.

The “Space Room” was co-created by a multicultural group of children. The performance, based on a text by Magdalena Mrozińska, was created as part of the #Połączeni project through the efforts of a group of children spending almost six months on creating it together with male and female artists, using tools from the world of art: music, song, word, set design, multimedia and dance.

The main theme of the #Połączeni project is incorporated into the story. It is the thought and belief that by creating and nurturing a diverse, multicultural community we become enriched with opportunities and perspectives and thus more capable. It is the belief that by creating a tolerant, multicultural society that respects differences, we are able to achieve more. Perhaps one day we will fulfil humanity’s impossible dream: world peace.

“Space Room” is a musical performance by the “Muzyka jest dla wszystkich” Foundation and Teatr Lalek Guliwer, created in a collaboration between artists and children from different countries living in Warsaw. The “Space Room” performance is the final result of the #Połączeni project. A series of creative activities and a musical performance created by children with artists. It is produced and co-financed within the Diverse Warsaw Programme of the Capital City of Warsaw and supported by the Artistic Residency Programme for artists from Belarus and Ukraine organised by the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute.
